"How is Hemp CBD Oil Extracted ?"

We know that hemp CBD oil can be beneficial to people and to animals, and we know that cannabinoids like CBD and THC bind to cannabis receptors all over our bodies – but how does the extract get from the cannabis plant to us? What’s the process, and how does it work? As always, I love to investigate, and I love to share that information with my readers so they’re in the know, too. I’m going to lay it all out for you right here, so get ready and keep on reading.

What is Hemp?

First, we need to know what hemp is. The definition of hemp has changed since 2014, when the Farm Bill was signed. Prior to 2014, hemp was the stalks and nonviable seeds of the cannabis plant or the non-Marihuana parts of the plant per the definition; all other parts (viable seeds, resin, leaves, and flowers) were considered Marihuana. With the Farm Bill and the introduction of industrial hemp, the new definition is any part of the cannabis sativa-L plant with less than .3% THC. Industrial hemp can only be grown in a state where the hemp is considered legal, and must be grown for purposes of research, but hemp CBD oil can be shipped and legally consumed in 48 states in large part due to the Appropriations Act of 2016 sec 763 ( although the DEA and FDA will tell you otherwise ). Typical wild-grown hemp (known as feral hemp) usually has a very low CBD concentration of about 1-2% and oil from those plants is around 10% CBD. The resin cultivar plants grown legally by GLH’s contract farmers contain upwards of 20% CBD rendering an oil that is anywhere between 60% and 80%, making them more effective for treating medical symptoms and as nutritional supplements.

Current federal hemp legislation notes that any hemp product that contains less than .3% THC is legal, and Green Lotus Hemp carefully regulates their hemp oils and resin cultivars to make sure they never go above the established .3% level. Hemp has been used throughout history (prior to 1930s prohibition) to make products like paper, boat and ship sails, clothing, sandals, and other textiles and materials. Thanks to former president Barack Obama’s 2014 Farm Bill, industrial hemp production is experiencing a renaissance in the United States, and the production of hemp CBD oil has become a large part of the preclinical medical trial community.

What is the Hemp CBD Extraction Process?

For the end product of CBD oil, there are numerous steps in a lengthy process – but the benefits of that process are extraordinary. Here’s how CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant at Green Lotus Hemp. First, GLH starts with the dried plant material of the hemp plant (you can include leaf and flower material, too, as it’s not high in THC). The process I’m describing here extracts the CBD oil using natural CO2, but there are four different methods that are considered less safe. I talked with Green Lotus Hemp’s President, Claudia Castillo, to find out all about the CO2 process. Here are the steps:

  1. Using high-pressure, supercritical CO2 extraction, raw CBD oil is extracted from the naturally high-CBD and low-THC hemp plant materials, using a machine built for this purpose.
  2. An additional refinement process removes nearly all THC from the hemp CBD oil obtained through CO2 extraction, leaving only 10/100 parts per million, which is 99% THC-free and non-detectable by most labs.

GLH’s isolate, or crystalline CBD (powder) starts as an ethanol-alcohol based extraction, followed by a distillation process and an isolation and crystallization process, which removes all trace amounts of solvents. GLH’s contract labs also use an organic solvent for the isolation process, which is considered much safer than other chemical processes.

GLH’s hemp CBD oil is full-spectrum, and contains high levels of beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes as well. Hemp CBD oil is legal for shipment to 48 states, and GLH’s products are available here. So now you know how hemp CBD oil extraction works, why GLH uses the best and healthiest method on the market, and where you can get hemp CBD oil to help with your medical symptoms, nutritional plan, or even your pet’s. Go forth and use all the resources at your command to be a healthier, happier you!
