"CBD Oil & Pets"

Humans are not the only animals on the planet that can benefit from CBD oil – almost every animal alive on Earth has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that responds to CBD and THC. If you’re like me, you care about animals, they are a part of your life, and a part of your family. Just like your other family members, you want them to have the best possible care and the best life possible. After all – isn’t this why we’re involved in promoting cannabis research and medical investigations into how it works? There’s no question that CBD oil can help people, and many people believe it can also help their pets. This article is about pets and CBD oil, and how it may help them in various ways to live healthier, happier lives.

How CBD Oil Can Help Animals

Since cannabis is still illegal at the federal level in the United States, but hemp is legal, many of the medical studies of the past few decades have been conducted on animals. I know, I know, we don’t want animals to be harmed – especially when we’re animal lovers ourselves. While I’m glad I don’t have to be the one to carry out these experiments and preclinical trials on cute little mice and rats, I understand the need for more scientific information on cannabis. We need to prove that it helps people, helps animals, and make it legal at the Federal level as a result. We need cannabis to be part of our arsenal against human illnesses, animal illnesses, and diseases like cancer that are present in both.

Because hemp oil with a THC concentration of less than .03% is legal in the United States, there are numerous CBD oil studies involving it. The U.S. government’s National Cancer Institute states that cannabinoids like CBD may have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer cell growth, and antiviral effects on animals with cancer. Cancer is on the allowed medical marijuana conditions list of almost all the legal marijuana states, and studies with mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may stop tumor growth by blocking blood vessel development that allows tumor to grow. Cannabinoids may also kill cancer cells and protect normal cells in the body – a recent study showed that CBD killed breast cancer cells while having no effect on normal breast cells. CBD may also be used with chemotherapy to increase cancer cell death and make chemo more effective.

My Experience with my Pet and CBD Oil

In addition to these amazing findings – and make no mistake, they are amazing – CBD and other cannabinoids may help with nausea, anxiety, and sleep. Just before my beloved black and tan coonhound passed away last week, we started her on CBD oil – just a few drops morning and night to ease her pain. Although there was no evidence that she had cancer, she’d had a cancerous toe removed two years ago and I suspected that’s what it was. We started her treatment much too late, and she was at the end of her life, anyhow – nine years is a long life for a coonhound. She had severe arthritis, which was preventing her from being her normal active self. Within one day of starting the CBD oil, my hound dog had the spring in her step back, seemed to be in less pain, and wanted to go for walks again. I could tell she was feeling better, but I didn’t realize the cancer was already in her spleen and her liver. We lost her less than a week later, and we miss her terribly. When we get another rescue dog, I will definitely include CBD oil in her everyday diet; what if it had prevented her from getting cancer in the first place, or prevented the tumor in her spleen from spreading? With no psychoactive effect on our animals, don’t they deserve the same chance to live a healthy life as we do? I believe they do.
